Mass shootings are increasing.

According to the Gun Violence Archive, which classifies a mass shooting as an occurrence in which four or more people are hurt or killed, there have been over 470 mass shootings in the US so far this year. Both domestic and public shootings are included in their statistics.

More recent data from the US indicates that there has been a major increase in gun ownership in recent years. According to a study that was released in February by the Annals of Internal Medicine, 7.5 million US individuals acquired their first firearm between January 2019 and April 2021.

As a result, 11 million people—including 5 million children—were exposed to firearms in their homes. At that time, 40% of new gun owners were either black or Hispanic, and around half of them were women.
