Venus Williams won her first match against a top-20 player in four years with a spectacular performance that turned back the clock.
Williams, 43, defeated Veronika Kudermetova of Russia 6-4, 7-5, in the opening round of the Western & Southern Open on Monday in Cincinnati.
Williams was expecting to breeze through Kudermetova, who is seeded 16th in the competition, but the seven-time grand slam champion had other plans.
The seasoned American stated after the victory, "Satisfaction from today is (from) all the labor that goes into simply being here at all.
"I tried my hardest to arrive as quickly as possible and in the best condition I could in that amount of time. Consequently, it is pleasant to succeed despite having limited time to prepare.

Williams was 4-1 down and on the back foot in both sets, but as she had done so many other times in her career, she managed to rally.
When you're down a double break, Williams remarked, "I think at some point you start to think, Well, I at least want to just hold serve for the rest of this set." "Such straightforward ideas. You then draw a little bit nearer. Okay, maybe I just want to win another point, you think.
"There are definitely some large holes today that I don't play from normally... That's tennis, though. What makes it exciting is that.
Williams will now wait to find out her Cincinnati opponent for the following round as she continues to get ready for the US Open in 2023.
She has previously defeated a top-20 opponent in the second round of the Western & Southern Open in 2019, when she defeated Kiki Bertens.
