Crystal Palace defeated Arsenal 0-1

Crystal Palace defeated Arsenal 0-1.

Despite having 10 men left on the field, Martin Odegaard's penalty allowed us to defeat Crystal Palace and win back-to-back games to open the season.

On minute 53, Eddie Nketiah was fouled in the area by Sam Johnstone, and the captain stepped up to convert the penalty. Moments thereafter, Takehiro Tomiyasu was sent out for receiving two yellow cards, marking our first Premier League dismissal since May 2022.

However, Mikel Arteta's team managed to hold on to the points after that owing to a strong rearguard performance, starting the season with six points from six.

first half annoyance

The teams were welcomed with fireworks, flames, loud music, and cheerleaders, but the early events failed to reach that level of excitement. The host was in a superior position going forward.of goal, and Eberechi Eze caused Aaron Ramsdale to make a straightforward save on the fifteenth minute mark before Cheick Doucoure fired a shot from 30 yards into the stands of the home team behind our shot-stopper.

We developed into the half gradually, and after shifting through the gears, on the 28th minute Kai Havertz won possession and threaded the ball between Eagles center backs Marc Guehi and Joachim Andersen for Eddie Nketiah to run onto. He resisted both of their challenges before slipping a shot past Sam Johnstone, but it only managed to hit the base of the post.

The tide was changing, and Nketiah soon had another opportunity when Odegaard and Declan Rice connected, giving the striker a one-on-one match with Johnstone, but it was unsuccessful.Four minutes before the opening 45 minutes ended, the captain tried his luck from distance with a dipping shot that Johnstone had to tip over. After that, Gabriel Martinelli volleyed a Thomas Partey cross wide.

big choices

We kept that momentum going into the second half, and we were able to make the coveted breakthrough within eight minutes. The Eagles relaxed when we earned a free kick, which allowed Martinelli to steal Nketiah in on goal before Johnstone was able to bring him down. Odegaard was given the opportunity to go up and miss the home goalkeeper from 12 yards after a VAR review.

There were opportunities for the game to end for and Partey.shot blocked before Havertz fired a shot that went wide of the goal, but in minute 67, the game took a new turn. Jordan Ayew spun away from Tomiyasu, who had already received a caution for delaying a throw-in, and he was given a second yellow, albeit replays revealed the touch was hardly there.

Crossing the line

From that point on, as Palace probed to try to take advantage of their man advantage, it was about digging in and trying to hold onto our one-goal lead. As Mikel Arteta tried his best to get us through the fourth quarter, Gabriel and Jorginho were thrown on to calm the ship.

It worked, and despite Palace controlling our side of the battlefield, we kept their danger to a minimum.the majority of the remaining play, but their great chance was lost when Odsonne Edouard blasted a header from an excellent Tyrick Mitchell cross well beyond.

After a scramble in the box and seven minutes of stoppage time, we successfully denied Roy Hodgson's team of any further opportunities when Mitchell blasted a half-volley over. Our players erupted in jubilant celebrations at the final whistle, proud that they had overcome hardship to secure consecutive victories.

Facts and figures

We kept a clean sheet on the road in the Premier League for the 200th time tonight, passing Chelsea (204) and Manchester United (205). Under Mikel Arteta, we've maintained a spotless record.Only under Bruce Rioch do they have a superior Premier League record (8/19 - 42 per cent - minimum five games), which they have in 28 of our 68 away games (41 percent).

For the first time since a run of three victories between October 2013 and August 2015, we have now defeated Palace twice in a row on the road in the league, and we have won 13 straight London derbies overall (W11 D2).

Since taking and converting a penalty for Vitesse against De Graafschap in the Eredivise in May 2019, Martin Odegaard has not done so in a league game. He is in fact only the third player since the start of the previous campaign to have at least 10 Premier League goals scored away from home, joining Harry Kane and Erling Haaland.16).

Roy Hodgson suffered his first league loss at Selhurst Park since taking over in April (P5 W3 D2 prior to today), and in the 11 Premier League seasons since 2013–14 (W1 D2 L8), only one home league victory has occurred.

This evening, Bukayo Saka made his 82nd straight appearance for us in the Premier League, tying the mark established by Paul Merson between February 1995 and February 1997.

Mikel Arteta was shortly in the Selhurst Park press conference room to discuss the game with the journalists there after seeing his club continue their winning start to the 2023–24 season.

The manager discussed a variety of subjects, including the victory, Gabriel's future, Declan Rice's play, VAR, and penalty takers.

This is everything he said:

Regarding the victory: I adored it, utterly adored. It's a really challenging location to arrive. We dominated the game, created plenty of chances, and played the way we wanted to play 11 versus 11. We missed two absolutely massive chances that we would typically convert, but we never gave up. We carried on as we had planned to. Eddie earned our permission to go.forward with his action, we converted the penalty, and after that we played with 10 men for 30 minutes, which is obviously a situation for which we weren't prepared.

We had to change, and I think the players did an outstanding job because I don't believe we revealed anything. I'm particularly pleased with the subs because of the way they entered the game, their focus, how they supported the team, and how they frequently altered the team's momentum.

Regarding Tomiyasu's second caution:

Since it is so obvious to me, I choose not to remark.

Regarding Gabriel's failure to start and whether rumors are to blame:

Nothing at all; it concerns the games we anticipated and our progress.to attack and defend, and what I think is the best course of action. He participated in both contests and contributed in different ways to our victories in each. He was excellent today, completely controlled the box when he entered, and he will play in many more games. Sometimes, the choice is that.

Regarding the prohibitions against timewasting, I have no problems. The only thing we are requesting is consistency because the referee made the call, they have been consistent with that, and they have given an explanation. In the absence of it, we must experiment with a stopwatch to determine what it is and what it is not.

I thought Declan Rice's performance was fantastic. He controlled the middle and won the match. He had a lot of influence.both guarding and attacking. Due to what we anticipated from Palace and what we required today, he played a different position than he did last week, and I thought he was excellent.

I'm not sure if the VAR consistently reviews red cards. The choice has been made, and we won't change it at this time. We adjusted, but sadly it made the game more difficult and you typically lose points in this league when you have to play for 30 minutes away from home. We are really grateful that we conquered that significant obstacle because it is uncommon for people to survive in the manner that we did.

whether Martin Odegaard has replaced the previous penalty taker:

I am clueless; the topicI'm happy with the player leadership and if they thought that was the correct thing to do. They must decide those things while on the field. Like everyone else, I was taken aback, but he scored the crucial goal, and as a result, we prevailed.

Regarding the possibility of bringing in large, powerful players:

When you build a squad, that is a quality that a squad must have in order to succeed, triumph, and continually be the greatest. We are attempting to achieve that, which calls for a particular profile, and we are able to be very physically demanding when necessary.

Regarding if we have yet this season even come close to the level he desires:
