Charles Martinet |
Nintendo has revealed that Charles Martinet, who provides Mario's eponymous voice, will leave the company.
Beginning with Super Mario 64 in 1996, the actor has provided the voice for the Italian plumber in the video games.
He did not, however, provide the voice for the movie's lead this year. Chris Pratt received the distinction.
In a statement on X, Nintendo said that working with Martinet, 67, had been a "honor."
Martinet, who will continue to serve as Nintendo's "Mario ambassador," appeared to like his new position.
Super Mario Bros. Wonder, the newest game featuring the valiant Italian, was introduced earlier this year, and the video led some fans to believe Martinet had been replaced.
"He will be stepping back from recording character voices for our games," Nintendo stated in a statement on Monday. "But he'll continue to tour the world sharing the joy of Mario and chatting with you all!
"Working with Charles to bring Mario to life for so many years has been an honor, and we want to appreciate and celebrate him. Please keep a watch out for a special video greeting from Charles and Mario creator Shigeru Miyamoto, which we will post later.
commercial success
Since 1996, Martinet has provided the voice for the character, who appears in a number of games including the Mario Kart and Mario Party series.
Despite the fact that Martinet has come to be associated with Mario, it was Hollywood A-lister Prattvoiced the renowned craftsmen in the wildly popular 2023 film, with Martinet doing Giuseppe and Mario's father's voices in their place.
Along with Mario, Martinet also provided the voices for other characters in the Mario series, such as Luigi, Mario's brother, and the antagonists Wario and Waluigi, as well as the characters' young offspring.
Super Mario Bros. Wonder and a remake of Super Mario RPG are scheduled for release on the Switch later in the year. 2023 has been a huge year for the Mario series, with the Mario movie earning over $1 billion at the box office.
