A cruise liner reportedly broke free of its moorings and crashed with a freight ship during a storm, according to passengers.

It allegedly occurred as a "huge storm rolled in" near Palma, Mallorca, according to passengers on the Britannia, a P&O Cruises ship located in Southampton, Hampshire.

A passenger said that the cruise liner had minor damage and that they were "being pushed ashore by tugs while confined to our cabins."

The captain "updated" visitors, according to a corporate representative.

A passenger claimed that the unexpected drama coincided with an emergency exercise.

Onboard the ship, witnesses captured the incident on film and in photographs.

The "unexpected drama" occurred, according to passenger Gavin McCoy, "while the local fire service and crew were carrying out an emergency drill."

A sudden rain and wind storm, he claimed, "ripped us away from our dockside moorings at around 11:00 BST, breaking tethering lines, water hoses, and causing the walkway to fall into the sea," as well as other damages.

"Ingy and I were sitting by the window in the coffee shop, and the first thing we saw were the blue dockside reception marquee tents blowing through the air," Mr. McCoy continued.

"We struck a nearby freight/cargo ship after drifting far from the berth."

The Balearic Islands are expected to be affected by the storm, which is probably one of the severe thunderstorms.

Mr. McCoy could see wreckage from one of their lifeboats that was struck in the water.

On the public address system, the captain announced to the passengers that "there's no structural compromise, but deck 5 has sustained a small amount of damage."

A spokeswoman for P&O Cruises stated that they were "working to assess the situation" and that they were "aware of an incident involving Britannia on Sunday morning."

Everyone was okay, according to Mr. McCoy, and there were just "a few scrapes and bumps to one or more lifeboats that project from the ship" on board.

"The many people on coach excursions will be able to get back on again," he continued.

In order to pick up passengers who had been on shore, Britannia has returned to dock.

The cruise left from Southampton and is scheduled to return on September 1.

The Queen Mary 2 broke free from its bow mooring line and drifted off the pier on August 4, making this the second emergency involving a Southampton ship in recent weeks.
