A lawmaker from the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party was found guilty on Friday by a court in the German city of Munich for comments he made equating a coronavirus vaccination campaign with anti-Jewish pogroms during the Nazi era.
In 2021, Florian Jäger, a former member of the Bundestag, the German parliament, uploaded a video to his Facebook page.
In it, he asserted that the COVID tactics of the German government were analogous to the terror campaign against German Jews in November of 1938.
What the court had to say regarding the AfD politicians' comments
The court determined that the incriminating remarks constituted incitement and ordered Jäger to pay a €2,700 ($2,930) fine. The politician's dire financial situation caused the amount to be cut from €5,400.
Senior attorneyThe Bavarian judiciary's antisemitic officer, Andreas Franck, stated in court that Jäger had deliberately sought to provoke.
He claimed that as a politician, he was aware of the pressing issues. And he added fuel to the fire with his video.
"The protection of Jews from anti-Semitic attacks would also be dragged down if the Holocaust is degraded to an arbitrary object of comparison for measures that are perceived as unwelcome," he continued.
Jäger now serves as the AfD's district chairman in Fürstenfeldbruck. He has a week to challenge the ruling.
